Te Hononga me Nga Wawata Pae Tawhiti o Te Pa o Penu / Whanau Connecting and Sharing Aspirations for Penu Pa 

Nei ra te mihi maioha ki a tatau te whanau o Te Pa o Penu, o te paraki whenua a Nama Ono (Totaranui A1D2B2B) ano hoki.

With support from the block trustees and marae committee, Kui Wano, Miria Koia, Sarai Morris, Johnson McKay & Tarsh Koia formed a working group to help engage our wider whanau to strengthen connections and contribute to collective planning and action for the Pa and whenua.

We are inviting all whānau connected to Penu/Nama Ono to participate in an engagement process to strengthen our connections, define the long term aspirations and goals for the pa and those who whakapapa to the whenua. 

Background

The Trustees for the Nama Ono block and the temporary Marae Committee will support the process to help whanau establish a new Marae Committee, who will guide this process after being voted in at the next Marae AGM. 

Step 1: Connecting with Whanau

  • December 2023 a short online survey was shared via the Penu Facebook and with as many whanau as possible. The results were then shared. 
  • January 2024 a face to face hui was held at the Pa to discuss the outcomes of the survey and discuss aspirations and goals. Concerns were raised about the level of engagement and participation from whanau. 

Step 2: Establishing Temporary Working Groups (Ohu) 

  • February 2024 whanau were engaged through Facebook and email database to invite people to join temporary working groups to define strategy and goals and to get more people involved in the work to uplift our aspirations.   • Fundraising Working Group: Securing financial support to sustain and enhance strategic goals of the pa, whenua and hapu/iwi.  Coordinator: Tamihana Hamiora-Reweti
  • Buildings & Maintenance Group: Improve and maintain essential facilities that support the wellbeing of our Pa and whanau. Wayne Makarini
  • Communications & Manaaki Group: Effective engagement and communication with whanau. Coordinator: Johnson McKay
  • Tieki Whenua Group: preserving and regenerating land and natural environment, preserving cultural and biological heritage. Coordinator: Manu Caddie.
  • March 2024 – April 2024 these Working Groups will meet to discuss how to establish goals and ways of working. If you would like to be involved in any of these Ohu, contact the Coordinator/

Strategic Planning

  • June 8-9th 2024 whanau are invited to participate in a Strategy Wananga at the Pa, guided by one of our whanaunga, Katerina Kupenga. This will further refine the strategies, goals and priorities for the Pa.

  • Objectives and goals 
  • Tikanga values 
  • Oucomes and measures of success

The sessions will be facilitated by our whanaunga Katerina Kupenga (No Te Aowera). 

Day 1: 11am – 6:00pm 

Hear from all whanau to shape key themes, values, aspirations 

Day 2: 9am – 2pm 

Wananga main priorities. Shape the final strategy to take to wider family for feedback.

  • July 2024 proposed period to have a Marae AGM and Nama Ono Block AGM, pending completion of Block financial statements. At least 31 days notice will be given with two proposed dates for whanau select from.

June – July 2024: additional whanau engagement online will continue to develop our Strategy Plan.


On Going Whanau Engagement

Upon the formation of the new Marae Committee, the Trustees of Nama Ono and the Marae Committee will work together to engage whanau on: 

  • Marae tikanga
  • Guiding the work of Ohu / Working Groups
  • Engaging whanau to continue to participate in developing goals, focus areas and input into decisions. 
  • Helping whanau to tieki and manaaki the needs and aspirations of our Pa, whenua and hapu. 

We want as many whanau as possible to have the opportunity to participate in this process. Please send this panui to all whanau who whakapapa to Penu.
